Understanding the PADI Scuba Diver qualification

Scuba Diver is an entry-level qualification with a more streamlined programme than the full PADI Open Water Diver course. The main differences are the depth limit and the supervision required after certification: as a Scuba Diver, you may dive to 12 metres only under the direct supervision of a PADI professional.

The full Open Water Diver qualification allows dives to 18 metres. It does not require direct instructor supervision after certification, although you must dive with a qualified buddy. This experience is the Scuba Diver course with a 12-metre limit, not the complete Open Water Diver programme.

How the training works

The course takes two days, although it may exceptionally extend to three. The training schedule is flexible. You complete five practical dives in total, divided between confined water and open water.

• Knowledge development covering the fundamental principles of scuba diving.
• Three confined-water dives in a pool, where you practise essential skills in controlled conditions.
• Two open-water dives in the sea, allowing you to apply what you have learned and explore the underwater environment.

These are the main stages of a programme that also includes other elements of entry-level diver training. Theory is available in Bulgarian, English and several other languages. You can complete it at home before starting the practical sessions.

Your digital learning materials include a textbook with five sections, three of which are compulsory for this qualification. You take an exam at the end of the course. International certification is awarded only after you successfully complete the training and pass the exam.

What your certification allows you to do

Location, participants and planning

The course takes place in Nessebar, in the Burgas region. You join a group of other participants whom you may not know beforehand. Children can take part from the minimum age of 12. The stated participant weight range is 30 to 120 kg.

Courses run throughout the summer, except on 13 July, 14 July and 2 August, and only when weather conditions are suitable. Allow at least seven days' notice when requesting your preferred date. You must also call the diving centre on the contact number provided one day before your dive to check the weather and whether the session can go ahead.

The activity provider states that cancellation is free up to 48 hours before the scheduled start. This is the provider's cancellation condition for the activity, not a separate general Adventico policy.

Medical paperwork and participation restrictions

Before beginning the practical training, you need a medical check-up and a clearance declaration from your GP. The diving centre supplies the required document template as a PDF.

The course is not suitable if you have epilepsy, a perforated eardrum, a runny nose, inflammatory conditions, or high blood pressure accompanied by heart disease. It is also unsuitable during pregnancy. If you have high blood pressure without an accompanying heart condition, written permission from a doctor is required.

Preparing for your dives

• Drinking alcohol on the evening before diving is not recommended.
• Avoid a long journey immediately before your dive.
• Bring a notebook for taking notes, swimwear, a towel and a bottle of water.
• A changing room and lockers for your belongings are available on site.
• If you have long hair, tie it back low at the nape of your neck before entering the water.
• Diving on an empty stomach is not recommended; you can have a light breakfast beforehand.

Receiving your video

Your video footage is sent through a Google Drive folder between three and seven days after the activity. You may need to download an HEVC codec from Microsoft's official website to play the videos.
