Lakatnik Adventure: Caving, Abseiling and Hiking

This Lakatnik adventure brings hiking, abseiling and a cave visit together in one day. The scenery around the Lakatnik Rocks makes the area ideal for a variety of outdoor experiences, from relaxed walking to the very different challenges of a vertical drop and underground darkness.

If you have imagined exploring beneath the earth like a character in a Jules Verne novel, or descending a rope like a commando, this day lets you try both while still enjoying a walk in nature. It also offers an opportunity to discover how you respond to heights and confined underground spaces. That does not override the organiser's explicit requirement that participants be in good physical condition and have no fear of heights.

A full day of moderate difficulty and varied challenges

The programme has a moderate level of difficulty and intensity. It runs on predetermined dates in a shared group with other participants, with a minimum of 4 people overall. Allow a full day in the Lakatnik area of Sofia Province.

Meet at Gara Lakatnik and hike through Petrenski Dol

The day begins at 08:30 near Gara Lakatnik railway station. You will first meet the group and guides before setting off towards Petrenski Dol to discover some of the area's less obvious natural highlights.

The route follows the Petrenitsa River to the village of Milanovo, then returns towards the Lakatnik rock massif and the well-known Alpine Meadow. This walking section takes approximately 3 hours.

A 30-metre abseil and a lunch break

After the hike, you will put on the equipment and abseil down a 30-metre vertical drop. The rope descent offers a completely different perspective on the rocks you have been exploring on foot. The programme also allows time for lunch; food is not included.

Explore the darkness of Temnata Dupka Cave

A short walk takes the group to the legendary Temnata Dupka Cave. Here, daylight gives way to darkness and you can experience the beauty of the underground world up close. Expect to get a little muddy: that is part of the cave experience described by the organiser.

At around 17:00, the programme ends back near Gara Lakatnik, at the Vodopada tavern. There is time to talk over the day's adventures over a beer before saying goodbye. Drinks and other personal expenses are not included.

What is included

• A licensed mountain guide and a caving instructor.
• Shared climbing equipment, including ropes, carabiners and other necessary items.
• Personal climbing equipment: a harness and helmet.

What to bring

• A windproof, waterproof jacket or a sturdy rain poncho.
• Supportive footwear, preferably waterproof boots with ankle coverage.
• Two hats: a thin winter hat without a pompom to fit under a helmet, and a summer hat.
• A backpack of up to 35–40 litres.
• Sunglasses.
• A head torch with charged batteries.
• Long trousers for abseiling and entering the cave.
• Recommended snacks such as nuts, chocolate or other sources of quick-release carbohydrates.

Requirements, insurance and arrangements

The minimum age is 18. You must be in good physical condition and have no fear of heights. Every participant must hold mountain insurance covering the day of the activity; the organiser's information states that this can be arranged at an insurance office.

Transport, mountain insurance, food and other personal expenses are not included. You must call the instructor on the supplied number three days before your reserved date to receive detailed directions and information. The stated minimum advance booking period is 48 hours, but this does not replace the separate requirement to contact the instructor three days beforehand.

The general description refers to scheduled weekends between April and September. However, the supplied calendar for 2026 also includes an October date and dates that do not fall on weekends. It lists:
