Two-Day Danube Kayaking Trip from Nikopol to Svishtov

A two-day Danube kayaking trip from Nikopol to Svishtov takes you past river islands and sandy shores, with a night spent camping close to the water. It is an experience for anyone who loves nature and life's simpler pleasures: watching the sun set over the river, walking hand in hand along the sand, warming food over a fire, sleeping in a tent and greeting the sunrise with a coffee.

Day 1: meet in Svishtov and start paddling from Nikopol

Meet the group at Svishtov harbour at 9:00 am. One of the oldest towns on the Danube, Svishtov has a history stretching back to Roman times. Cars are left in a guarded car park, and an organised minibus takes the group to Nikopol. Each participant pays separately for this transfer on the day.

On arrival, the experienced guide gives a short briefing before you collect your equipment and pack your belongings into the kayaks. Around midday, the journey on the water begins, opening up a different view of the Danube and its islands, riverbanks and changing scenery.

A rock-hewn church and the islands on the way to Persin

The first stop is St Stephen's rock-hewn church. Carved into a sheer limestone face beside the river, this little-known site has a distinctive atmosphere and a sense of time standing still.

You then paddle past Gradina, Lakat, Palets, Golyam Katunar and Malak Katunar islands. Each brings its own scenery, character and legends to the journey. A stop on one of the islands gives you time for lunch and a beach break, surrounded by unspoilt nature, golden sand and clear water.

In the afternoon, you reach Persin Island, part of Persina Nature Park and a habitat for rare bird species. Camp is set up at the island's tip. The paddling gives way to an evening beside the river, a night in your tent and the slower pace that makes staying outdoors after sunset so rewarding.

Day 2: river channels, Milka Island and the finish in Svishtov

The second morning begins with breakfast and fragrant coffee before you pack for the next stage. Back on the water, you follow a different route through misty waterways and river channels bordered by dense vegetation.

There is a stop for a beach break and a short rest on Milka Island. This green island is home to herons, cormorants, freshwater turtles and beavers, all part of the rich wildlife that makes this stretch of river so absorbing.

In the late afternoon, you head towards Svishtov, finishing on the riverbank a little downstream from the town harbour. If you would like to round off the day with local river fish, the recommended restaurant is Pametnitsite, known for its fish soup, grilled catfish and peaceful Danube views. Dinner is a suggestion for after the programme, not an included service.

What to pack
