Climb Dvuglav and Iglata in Malyovitsa – for One or Two
Description
Climb Dvuglav and Iglata in Malyovitsa
Climb Dvuglav and Iglata in Malyovitsa for a day that brings together two summits, hundreds of metres of exposed climbing and the excitement of moving through vertical mountain terrain. There is plenty of adrenaline, plenty to smile about and a route that takes you deep into the wild heart of the Rila Mountains.
This adventure leaves the familiar hiking trails behind for a landscape shared by wild goats, ravens and experienced mountaineers. Accompanied by a licensed alpine guide, you will tackle two adventurous ascents using a varied range of alpine rope techniques for movement and protection. The itinerary is tailored to you alone or to you and one other participant, rather than a large mixed group.
Two summits and a rarely seen side of Rila
Your reward is hundreds of metres of rewarding rock climbing and an exceptional panorama of the Malyovitsa peaks and Rila Monastery. From exposed ridges and alpine routes that few people reach, the mountains take on a very different perspective.
- Reach two alpine summits in one day: Dvuglav and Iglata.
- Enjoy more than 200 metres of exposed climbing on scenic alpine routes.
- Complete four long abseils across Dvuglav and Iglata.
- Take part in a private outing for your chosen number of participants, with a maximum of two people.
Your route through the day
Meet at around 8:00 am in the car park at the Malyovitsa Central Mountain School, known locally as TsPSh Malyovitsa. From there, hike through the scenic Malyovitsa Valley to the distinctive BAK alpine shelter and the Zliya Prelez col.
After the approach, complete a full traverse of Dvuglav. Three long abseils down its west ridge bring you beneath Iglata. You then climb Iglata by its north ridge, following the route of the peak’s first ascent.
Another abseil takes you down from Iglata before the route turns upwards again, with more than 150 metres of climbing on Dvuglav’s west ridge. Finish with the hike back to the Malyovitsa Central Mountain School and departure.
Duration and fitness requirements
Allow 8–12 hours for the complete adventure. The time needed depends on your fitness, and the programme is personalised for you and, if you choose, one other participant.
Beginner mountain hikers can take part, provided they have good coordination and a good level of physical fitness. This is not an ordinary walk: the day combines a substantial mountain approach, exposed climbing and rope descents.
The experience is for adults only, with a minimum age of 18. It is not suitable for anyone with a phobia of heights.
What is included
- A licensed alpine guide.
- Personal and shared alpine equipment: helmet, harness, rope and belay equipment.
- Mountain insurance for the duration of the ascent, including extreme sports cover.
What to bring
- Suitable sports clothing.
- Footwear with good sole grip.
- A backpack of approximately 20–30 litres.

Season, weather and cancellation
The climbs take place in the Malyovitsa area of the Rila Mountains, from mid-June until the end of November. Outings can run daily in good weather. This is a weather-dependent experience, so suitable conditions are essential for it to go ahead.
