Kayaking from Belene to Persin and Magarets Islands

Two islands with different personalities

Magarets, also known as Magaretsa, is a relatively small island directly opposite the town of Belene. Persin is the largest Bulgarian island in the Danube, with a stated area of 41 square metres. The route brings you to both: first to the sand dunes of Magarets, then to the headland of Persin.

This is an outing for those days when you want to swap familiar views for open water and wild islands. There is upstream paddling along the way, balanced by opportunities to stop, look around and enjoy where you are.

Meet at Belene’s beach

The group meets at the town beach in Belene at 10:00 am. If you would like a more leisurely start, you can arrive earlier for a morning coffee on the terrace of Hotel Prestige and take in the view before heading to the meeting point.

The briefing begins at 10:00 am, followed by a short introductory lesson for beginners and allocation to kayak crews. The group sets off at around 11:00 am.

Magarets’ dunes and the headland of Persin

The first stretch takes you against the current. After approximately an hour of paddling, the group reaches the sand dunes of Magarets. Fine sand, shade and clear, cool water make this an inviting place for a rest and some beach time after your efforts on the river.

The next stop is the headland of Persin Island, where you can take a break and photograph the surrounding scenery. After time to enjoy the views, the route heads downstream along the northern side of Magarets. The day ends back at the beach in Belene.

• Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

Schedule and advance arrangements

The experience runs on specific dates during the year. The published date in the 2026 schedule is 5 September. For groups of more than three people, a trip outside the published schedule may be possible by prior enquiry.

Participation must be requested at least 24 hours before the start. The outing is weather-dependent. Call the activity provider on the supplied telephone number the day before your adventure to check the weather and conditions for going out on the water, and to confirm the group’s meeting point.
