Kayaking to the Vardim Maldives near Svishtov

Discover the Vardim Maldives by kayak on a day among the Danube’s sandbars, quiet channels and wildlife. Setting off from the village of Vardim near Svishtov, this guided group adventure takes you to Vardim Island, where the river reveals a different side of itself and beavers are very much at home.

Island sands with a faraway feel

When the Danube’s water level drops, fine sandy spits emerge around Vardim Island. These are the places affectionately nicknamed the “Vardim Maldives”. It may sound like a bold comparison, but the scenery makes the name understandable: pale sand, open space and water that change your picture of this familiar river. The guides return regularly, finding something new to discover each time.

Through the channel between Great and Little Vardim

The route follows a narrow, scenic channel that divides the island into Great Vardim and Little Vardim. Branches reach over the water, fallen trees line the banks, and birdsong fills the air. As you paddle, it feels a little like travelling through a jungle: green, full of life and a world away from your daily routine.

Roe deer, otters, wild boar and jackals leave signs of their presence here, but the beavers are the channel’s most distinctive residents. You will pass their lodges, and with some luck you may spot the animals themselves. Sightings are not guaranteed: this is wildlife on its own terms.

Your day on the river

Meet at the boat landing in Vardim village at 10:00 am. The day starts with a briefing, a short introductory lesson for beginners and allocation to kayak crews. The group launches at 11:00 am and reaches the channel approximately 25 minutes later.

Once inside, the pace eases so you can take in your surroundings rather than simply paddle past them. Beyond the channel, the sandy “Maldives” await, with time for photographs, games, relaxing on the beach and walks. Afterwards, the group heads back along the river. The return journey brings the quiet satisfaction of a day outdoors: fewer words, a calmer mind and a renewed sense of life.

Dates and advance arrangements

The trip runs on scheduled dates rather than every day. The published 2026 schedule lists 13 September, 26 September, 11 October and 31 October. For groups of more than three people, an alternative date may be possible by prior enquiry.

Participation must be requested at least 24 hours before the start. The trip is weather-dependent. Contact the activity provider on the supplied telephone number the day before your outing to check the weather conditions and confirm the meeting point.
