Vardim ‘Maldives’ kayaking: wild channel and sandbars
Paddle calm Danube waters to the golden sandbars known locally as the Vardim ‘Maldives’. When the river drops, wide sandy spits and crystal shallows appear—perfect for a relaxed day outdoors.
What you’ll see on the Danube
The route passes a picturesque channel that splits the island into Great and Little Vardim. You’ll glide beneath overhanging branches and past fallen trees, with birdsong all around and frequent signs of wildlife—deer, otters, wild boar and jackals. This is also beaver country: we pass their territory and, with a bit of luck, you may spot them.
How the day flows
– 10:00 – meet at the boat dock in Vardim village for a safety briefing and quick basics for first-timers.
– We form crews and at 11:00 set off toward the island.
– About 25 minutes to the channel—then we slow down and enjoy the silence and views.
– After exiting the channel we reach the sandbars—the local ‘Maldives’—with time for photos, beach breaks, games and walks.
– Return along a river branch—calmer, recharged and full of fresh impressions.
