Exploring James Hollis's The Eden Project

As you make your own gingerbread house, you will explore the poetic, insightful writing of Jungian analyst James Hollis in The Eden Project: In Search of the Magical Other. Creating the house becomes a symbolic act of self-discovery alongside your encounter with the ideas in the text.

One theme is love as a path towards personal maturity rather than somewhere to escape from yourself. Another is disappointment: rather than seeing it only as a collapse, you can consider how it might open the way to a deeper understanding of both yourself and another person.

The experience invites you to question the fantasy of a “magical other” who will make you whole. In its place, you will explore building an inner foundation of your own: a home sustained not by sugar and dreams, but by understanding, effort and personal truth.

Love, roles and choosing authenticity

The conversations will make room for love as a defence mechanism, the roles we take on and the projections we bring into relationships. You will also consider the pain of losing illusions, without overlooking the other side of that experience: the satisfaction of choosing to be genuine and true to yourself.

Food and cooking will also be explored as ways of grounding yourself. Practical tasks can bring your attention back to the here and now, help you step out of a stream of anxious thoughts and reconnect with your body. About your facilitator, Verzhinia Petkova

Verzhinia Petkova is a psychologist and a Jungian psychotherapist practising under supervision. Her personal and professional journey in psychology and the exploration of inner life spans more than 15 years.

Her work brings together an analytical approach, deep intuition and an easy manner. She pays close attention to symbolism, personal history and each participant's inner world, all of which inform how this experience is facilitated.
