Every stage matters: the choice of paper, the way it is trimmed and folded, the tightening of the book block and the making of its cover. You will explore the reasoning behind the movements: folds strengthen the sheets, stitching provides stability, and leather or fabric contributes both beauty and durability.

Building a notebook with your own hands

A craftsperson will guide you through the process step by step. You will learn why paper is trimmed in a particular way, how to produce even stitching and how to prepare the spine of the book block. You will see what makes a cover stable and how the separate elements come together as a finished object.

As you work, you will discover why certain bookbinding techniques have remained largely unchanged for centuries, while others developed in response to specific practical challenges. The explanations become hands-on knowledge: you will follow the process yourself, from the first fold and work with thread to the final smoothing of the leather.

Through the studio windows, you can watch the light changing over Tsarevets, shadows moving across the hills and the city shifting between different moods. Alternating close attention to a small detail with a glance at the view gives the session a calm rhythm. Alongside learning a craft, there is space to experience time at a slower, more attentive pace.

A personal notebook with a story before its first entry

At the end, you will hold a notebook you have made yourself, from the paper to the last thread. Its character will come from the work, care and understanding you put into it. The blank pages can hold ideas, travel notes, drawings or lists, allowing it to become a personal companion for years to come.

You will also take away a view of what usually remains hidden behind the covers of a finished publication: the process, the knowledge, the movements of the hands and the quiet of concentrated work. Participants, location and booking

The workshop is for participants aged 7 and over and takes place in a small group of up to 6 people. You will work alongside other participants who may be unfamiliar to you. Participation can be arranged for one or two people. The venue is The House Centre for Applied Arts and Crafts in Veliko Tarnovo.

Advance booking is required according to the workshop schedule, at least 24 hours before the session. The listed dates are 3 October at 14:00 and 24 October at 11:00. Your specific attendance needs to be arranged when booking.
