Danube and Yantra Kayaking from Vardim

Danube and Yantra kayaking from Vardim brings changing river scenery, island stops and the freedom of travelling on the water into one adventurous day. The route captures the character of northern Bulgaria through leafy channels, a break on a small island and a paddle to the cliffs near Belyanovo. Two rivers and two islands shape the journey, with a different side of the landscape unfolding along each stretch.

Meet in Vardim and set off along the Danube

The group meets at 10:00 am at the boat landing in the village of Vardim. You receive a short briefing before everyone is assigned to their boats. Then you head downstream on the Danube, accompanied by an experienced guide or instructor.

The first part of the route takes you through a scenic channel separating Vardim Island into Little Vardim and Great Vardim. Surrounded by greenery, this sheltered passage feels like a hidden river world, revealing itself one paddle stroke at a time.

A shoreside break on Sandokan Island

Around an hour and a half after setting off, you reach a small island known to local fishermen as Sandokan. The group stops here to relax and recharge before the next part of the journey.

Unpack the sandwiches you have brought, enjoy your own coffee, tea or another drink, and take in the quiet by the water. This pause is part of the day's rhythm: a chance to rest between the two river sections.

Up the Yantra to the cliffs near Belyanovo

After the break, you paddle upstream on the Yantra towards the cliffs near the village of Belyanovo. The setting has an almost legendary quality, with picturesque meanders carved out by the river and plenty of scenery to enjoy and photograph along the way.

Stories of local figures and events add another dimension to the landscape. There is more to the day than paddling: you also discover something of the places you pass through. The route ends near Belyanovo, where a minibus meets the group for the return journey to Vardim.
