three-day-pottery-experience
Pottery in Sofia — Three Days with Clay

Pottery in Sofia over three separate days gives you time to follow the process beyond one attempt at the wheel. Start with clay, return to the shaped vessels for details and finish by selecting glazes. Choose a package for one or two, including materials and an experienced teacher.

First session: clay and the wheel

Only the first meeting is individual. Work with a master who guides you in understanding the material through touch. Feel clay respond to pressure, see the form change and discover the boundary between controlled movement and an unexpected result.

Create up to three vessels. Although they begin with the same clay, your movements lead them towards different shapes. An initial idea may change, and an unplanned solution can become the most interesting part.

Initial centring and the wheel's movement are meaningful stages rather than a brief demonstration. Observe how a small change in pressure affects the vessel. Guidance supports the work while preserving the decisions that make it yours.

Second session: revisit the form

Let the vessels reach a condition suitable for further work. Examine them from different sides, assess proportions and decide what to add. Only the first session is individual; subsequent stages are in a group.

One vessel can become a handled cup; another can gain a line or texture. Experiment with sgraffito, drawing, a carved mark or a line across the surface. Continue with a shape you know rather than starting again each time.

This stage allows decisions you did not anticipate at the wheel. Revisit the work, reconsider your idea and focus on a detail. Time with the material belongs to the value of three meetings.

Drying and first firing

A necessary pause follows. The clay dries and the vessels enter the kiln. Firing changes the material and gives it durability, with part of the result no longer depending solely on your movements.

The programme spans separate meetings, not a promise of three consecutive uninterrupted days. Time between stages allows work to continue according to the vessels' condition. After firing, the familiar shape has a different surface and hardness.

Third session: choose glazes

Return to select glazes and finish what you began. Colour before firing may differ afterwards. The surface can change too: some details stand out, while others become less prominent.

This uncertainty is part of ceramics rather than a fully predictable outcome. Your decisions work alongside the clay and firing. Following those changes distinguishes the programme from a single turn at the wheel.

Keep your personal pieces

Keep the vessels reflecting your movements, decisions and time. Remember the first centring, the first marks from your hands, shaping and colour choices, with the finished object connecting all stages. Gain both a ceramic piece and experience of making it, from clay to details and glaze.

Recognise the shape you tried to sustain at the wheel in your finished piece.

Choose an Adventico voucher for pottery in Sofia: three meetings with clay, a teacher and time to return to your work as it develops into finished ceramics.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1036/6114/2354/files/100183_8265e43c-bc44-4e9e-af45-cfb7d83ff87c.webp?v=1791624286
