Winter Horse Riding near Svoge with Tea and Treats

Treat yourself to winter horse riding near Svoge and swap city noise for woodland trails, open meadows and views across the Iskar Gorge. In the village of Zasele, just 50 kilometres from Sofia, this mountain outing pairs a horseback ride through the winter landscape with warming tea or coffee and sweet treats afterwards. When snow covers the slopes, the rocks and peaks take on a different character, and travelling on horseback gives you time to appreciate the view.

The Balkan Mountains in winter around Zasele

Zasele lies in the Iskar Gorge, a scenic area known for its striking rock formations, clear mountain streams and varied plant life. Nearby woods shelter centuries-old trees, broad meadows open up the landscape, and surrounding peaks, including Bula, offer far-reaching views. There is something to enjoy here in every season, but winter brings a particular stillness to the mountains.

Your starting point is a small ranch above the well-known Ivan Vazov eco-trail. Views of the gorge and neighbouring peaks begin right here, giving you a chance to slow down, leave your everyday routine behind and settle into being outdoors.

Meet your horse and head out on the trail

An instructor welcomes you when you arrive. A 10-minute introduction covers the basic techniques for guiding your horse before you set off. No previous riding experience is needed: the horses are calm and well trained, making the outing suitable even if this is your first time in the saddle.

The ride itself lasts 60 minutes. The route takes you through woodland and open meadows, along gently sloping paths and out to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the gorge and surrounding summits. The changing terrain keeps the journey engaging, while the quiet, fresh air and steady rhythm of your horse help you feel a world away from the city.

This is an experience that brings activity and calm together. There is time to feel the cold mountain air, take in the snow-covered slopes when conditions allow, and enjoy the landscape without rushing on to the next thing.

A warm welcome back with tea, coffee and treats

Back at the ranch, you can warm up and talk about the ride over tea or coffee and sweet treats. Choose between the wooden gazebo overlooking the mountains and a warm indoor space. It is a relaxed way to round off the time outdoors and share your favourite moments from the trail.

Up to 60 minutes are set aside for this part of the visit. The stated total experience duration is 130 minutes, covering the introduction, the ride and time for refreshments.

What the experience includes

  • Horse riding for one, two, three or four people, depending on the package chosen.
  • A 10-minute riding introduction.
  • A 60-minute ride in the countryside.
  • Up to 60 minutes for tea or coffee and sweet treats afterwards.

Who can take part

The experience is also suitable for children. The maximum rider weight is 120 kg, and no previous riding experience is required.

Rides take place in a group that may include people you have not met before. The stated minimum group size is two and the maximum is four. A package for one participant does not mean a private ride or remove the minimum group requirement.

What to wear and how to get there

  • Wear comfortable sports clothing suitable for the season, including long trousers.
  • Arrive 10–15 minutes before your agreed start time.
  • You can travel in your own car: the road to the ranch is paved and well maintained.
  • If you would like to bring the horses a treat, carrots and apples are suitable. Do not feed them sugar or bread.

Season, reservations and weather

Rides run from October to May, Tuesday to Sunday, between 10:00 and 17:00. Reservations require at least 48 hours' notice before your preferred start time.

The activity is weather-dependent. In very poor conditions, such as heavy rain or a storm, the organiser may move the ride to another day. Although this is a winter experience, snow cover is not guaranteed.

The organiser's stated cancellation policy allows free cancellation up to 48 hours before the reserved time.

Give someone time in the winter mountains
